Research Topic: Investigating the genetic and metabolic mechanisms linking diabetes to peripheral artery disease (PAD).
Project and Position Details: Dr. Dokun’s lab is located at Eckstein Medical Research Building (EMRB). His research interest focuses on understanding how genetic factors and the metabolic abnormalities associated with diabetes contribute to vascular diseases such as peripheral artery disease (PAD). All undergraduate volunteers will be involved in on going research projects. Prior experience is strongly desired, but training will also be provided. Our goal is to have each volunteer assigned an independent research project. Recognition will be awarded from transcript recognition to publication co-authorship.
Techniques involved: tissue cell culture, microscopy, protein/nucleic acid isolation, westerns, qPCR, animal handling, animal breeding, animal surgery, tissues harvesting, live animal imaging via means of laser, ultra sound and magnetic resonance.
Specific Responsibilities:
- Learning and performing basic science research in cell biology, cell physiology, molecular biology and genetics
- Good record keeping of tasks assigned and meticulous data collection
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office, data organization, statistical analysis and report writing
- Proficiency in MATLAB coding
- Being able to present at weekly laboratory meeting and UI research symposium;
General maintenance and organization of lab equipment and supplies - Work with or train other laboratory personnel or students in research techniques or procedures
Qualifications: Qualifications Current undergraduate or recent graduated students majoring in chemistry, biology or other related fields (bioengineering, biomedical sciences, pre-med, etc.) Minimum Qualifications: Current undergraduate or recent graduated students major
Time Commitment: 10-15 hours/week
Compensation: Volunteer (Optional registration for URES:3991 or URES:3992 0-credit transcript recognition), To be determined
