Project Details: 

The Tung Lab is focused on the development of novel genomic technologies in the diagnosis of rare cancers and blood disorders. We study the roles of both somatic and germline genetic variants in various cancer predisposition syndromes, with a specific interest in hereditary hematological malignancies and inherited bone marrow failure syndromes. We are also interested in the development of novel diagnostic tools in pediatric cancers. 

 

Examples of ongoing projects include:

A) Liquid biopsies using plasma and cerebrospinal fluid cell free DNA in pediatric brain tumors using long-read nanopore based genome sequencing.

B) Germline genomic profiling in adolescents and young adults with myeloid malignancies

 

This research assistant position will include:

a) DNA extraction from whole blood and cultured skin fibroblasts for long-read nanopore based genome sequencing

b) Maintenance of patient’s cultured skin fibroblasts for functional analysis

c) General lab maintenance

 
Qualifications:

1) Experience in molecular and cellular biology, genetics, biochemistry, or microbiology.

2) Attention to detail and organization.

3) Experience with DNA extraction from cell culture and whole blood (required).

4) Experience cell culture, PCR, RT-qPCR, and/or ELISA (preferred).

 
Time Commitment: 10-20 hours/ week (minimum of 4 hour blocks each session), at least a 1 year commitment
 
Compensation: Volunteer (Optional registration for URES:3991 or URES:3992 0-credit transcript recognition), Academic Credit (1-4 Semester Hours)
 
Start Date: Immediate, Near future, Fall semester, Spring semester, Summer semester
 
Timeline: Ongoing, potential to be a continuous position
