These are topic areas and questions that you can consider when interviewing undergraduate students.

Gauging excitement and enthusiasm
  • Why do they find your research interesting? 
  • Have you learned where you could support their learning?
  • Do you have ideas on pathways for additional explorations of interests?
GPA & Coursework?
  • Is GPA a concern for them?
  • Are there any courses that they have struggled with in the past that coincide with your research?
  • Are there any course that they will take in the future that you could support the understanding of through your research?
Resume
  • Did the student stick to commitments in the past or have a previous job?
  • What is their current level of engagement on campus?
  • Have they taken on any activities or positions that teach independence as well as teamwork?
Interest in Independence
  • Does your student have an interest beyond your project that could connect?
  • Do they have any interest in taking on independence with certain activities or projects?
Questions
  • Are they curious about how this research could support future learning?
  • Long-term: Do they want to know what your plans are and how they can help?
