The Office of Undergraduate Research proudly presents 2025 EURA Winner Seren Castellano
Seren Castellano currently studies Biology and Anthropology as a junior at the University of Iowa. In addition, she is working toward an Ancient Civilizations minor. Department of Biology professor Maurine Neiman, facilitates Castellano's research endeavors.
Describe your current project.
Currently, I am studying the molecular evolution of a snail species, Biomphalaria glabrata, to understand parasitic resistance. By looking into natural populations from Kenya, we can better characterize the natural resistance and across lab populations.
What do you enjoy most about research?
Research is a great way to get involved in science and learn new things about the world. However, I think the most fun part about research is meeting new people, creating a collaborate and exciting experience!
Outside of research and academics...
Outside of research, I participate in many students organizations such as Anthropology Club, SACNAS, GENE, and Fencing Club. I love watching movies, going for walks, and spending time with my friends.
She has major plans after graduation.
After my undergraduate degree, I plan on attending a Ph.D. program studying the evolutionary genetics and anatomy of our extinct ancestors, known as hominins, and ancient civilizations.
Thank you for your contributions to our research community!
