Research in the Smith lab focuses on the inflammatory and endothelial response to acute surgical stress

We are seeking a motivated undergraduate student for a full-time summer research position in an environmental toxicology laboratory at the University of Iowa. This project focuses on measuring polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), a class of environmental contaminants, and examining their molecular effects in biological systems using analytical chemistry and molecular biology approaches.

University Housing and Dining at the University of Iowa is piloting a summer internship housing program in the summer of 2026. For interns at the University of Iowa or in the Iowa City area, the university will make available beds in residence hall rooms between the dates of May 23, and August 1, 2026. Rates are pro-rated based on length of stay.

The overall goal of our lab is to understand the interactions between different environmental factors and microbes using a One Health framework, or the shared health of humans, animal and the environment. The specific project the student will be involved with is investigating farmers' risk factor of tick-borne diseases.
