The Office of Undergraduate Research proudly presents 2025 EURA Winner Grace Peil

Grace Peil currently studies Math and Biology as a junior at the University of Iowa. Department of Internal Medicine Assistant Professor Sarah Short, facilitates Peil's research endeavors.

Describe your current project.
Within Dr. Short's lab, which focuses on colon cancer research, I am investigating how cell migraton is impacted by different genes. My current gene of interest is Glutathione Peroxidatse 1 (GPx1) which is elevated in colon cancer.

What do you enjoy most about research?
I enjoy the opportunity to be constantly learning and sharpening my skills within the lab. There is never a day you can't learn or grow from! Additionally, it's great to work within a supportive team where you can both learn and teach.

Outside of research and academics...
I am involved in a couple campus clubs including as vice president of the math club and a regular patron of knitting club. I also enjoy volunteering at the hospital. When I'm not out and about I'm often at home baking or knitting with my cat, Kita.

She has major plans after graduation.
After college I plan to go into an MSTP (combined MD and PhD) program. Here I hope to expand my knowledge in many fields, especially those of cell and developmental biology.

Thank you for your contributions to our research community!
