The Young Laboratory in the Department of Anatomy & Cell Biology and the Iowa Neuroscience Institute is focused on the fundamental question “How do synapses enable neuronal circuits to transmit a wide diversity of information?” Dr. Young's lab is seeking an undergraduate research assistant.
Duties include general laboratory maintenance such as glassware washing and sterilization, maintenance of laboratory supplies, preparation of solutions and bacterial growth media, and monitoring biohazardous and chemical waste. The main focus of this position will be the assistance of the mouse colony. Willingness/comfort working with rodents will be required. These duties will include monitoring of colony, genotyping, breeder management, and euthanasia.
This position requires reliability, good time management, attention to detail, and the ability to work independently. This is an entry level laboratory position with the potential to involve introduction to basic molecular biology techniques. Previous PCR experience a plus.
Position may also include support to other lab staff through assistance in molecular cloning, cell culture, and tissue processing.
Work schedule is flexible with preference to candidates available for a minimum of 12 hours per week and to candidates with an interest in pursuing graduate education in life science research.
