Project and Position Details
Dr. Alexander Claussen is a surgeon-scientist in the Department of Otolaryngology and his laboratory studies the molecular and cellular biology of hearing loss and related treatments, including cochlear implants. The goal of this translational research is to prevent hearing loss and improve treatments for the hearing impaired. We have multiple ongoing projects, including:
1. Investigating the mechanisms of drug-induced hearing loss to develop preventative treatments.
2. Studying the immune response to cochlear implantation in the inner ear.
3. Using advanced imaging techniques to assess the inner ear after cochlear implantation in human cochlear implant recipients.
We aim to make this a great opportunity for students looking to learn about careers in medicine and/or biomedical science research as well as strengthen their experience and growth through involvement in research, publications and mentorship. Students will learn and conduct electrophysiologic tests of hearing, immunohistochemistry and microdissection techniques, confocal microscopy among other techniques.
