Project details
The Cole research group is a Chemistry Education Research group at the University of Iowa that investigates how students learn chemistry and how that can guide the design of instructional materials and teaching strategies.
The MICRO project is a collaborative project with Skidmore College and the University of Notre Dame. The project was initially designed with at-home analytical chemistry laboratory learning in mind during the shift to remote learning due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The team designed a series of analytical lab experiments that use microfluidics and have an inquiry-based laboratory structure. For the research at the University of Iowa, we are assessing how faculty beliefs about laboratory instruction shift with the implementation of inquiry-based MICRO labs and professional development training received at the MICRO workshops. As part of this analysis, we are analyzing laboratory materials to determine what opportunities students have to engage in authentic scientific practices during the laboratory experiment. As an undergraduate researcher, you would be trained on how to analyze course materials and would collaborate with a graduate student to complete the analysis.
As an undergraduate researcher you will gain experience with chemistry education research methods and literature.
