Project details
Are you interested in genes, the brain and behavior? Professor Chun-Fang Wu’s lab in the Department of Biology is looking to hire motivated undergraduates to participate in lab maintenance and research projects, to start this spring and continuing through the summer.

We are a neurogenetics lab, and we use the fruit fly Drosophila melanogaster to investigate various aspects of neurodegeneration in aging and age-related diseases. Techniques we employ include classical and molecular genetics, behavioral studies, electrophysiology, and cell cultures. New hires will join the current undergraduate team, and would be responsible for basic lab maintenance assignments, with the opportunity to participate in supervised lab research projects. This is a unique opportunity to gain first-hand research experience and develop critical thinking skills in an academic research environment.

For applicants who have an interest in office work, including gaining experience in editorial work in scientific publications, their duties may include work for the Journal of Neurogenetics.

We are looking for applicants who can commit at least 10 hours per week. Freshmen and sophomores are particularly encouraged to apply. If you are interested, please email Abby Hawken (abigail-hawken@uiowa.edu) with the subject line ‘Research Assistant Position,’ and attach your resume. You are also welcome to write a short statement describing why you are interested in working in the Wu lab and/or what qualities you believe you can bring to the lab as a research assistant, but this is not required. Please also email Abby if you have any questions.
